Rotherham Clifton's Under 13's travelled to Sheffield for their first game of the season on Sunday. Coaches Trevor Culic and Olly Dixon were faced with a selection headache before the game, having five players unavailable. This meant that they had to borrow two players from Sheffield in order to scrape together a bare fifteen. Sam Abdul was named captain before the game for the first time in his Clifton career. Sheffield started the game strongly and spent the first five minutes camped on the Clifton line. Clifton were awarded a scrum ten metres from their own line, and after some slick hands from the backs the ball eventually made its way to winger, Connor Edwards, sho stepped round his man and sprinted the length of the field scoring in the corner to give Clifton a 5-0 lead. Sam Edwards was unable to convert a difficult kick. This breakaway try seemd to spur Clifton on who then went on to dominate the rest of the period, with Jean-Luc Perkins scoring Clifton's second after a powerfull run which enabled him to break through the heart of the Sheffield defence. Sam Edwards did the honours of converting from infront of the posts to put Clifton 12-0 infront. Just before the end of the period Sheffield hit back, scoring after some strong work from their forwards, with their hooker eventually driving over the Clifton line from short range. Sheffield converted making the score at the end of the first period 7-12 in Cliftons favour. Sheffield started the second period as they had finished the first, with some strong runing from the forwards and several pick and goes from the base of the rucks. Clifton eventually infringed in their own twenty two giving Sheffield a penalty. The big Sheffield centre took it quickly, and some soft Clifton tackling left him with an easy run in to score under the posts. Sheffield converted making the score 14-12 to Sheffield. Clifton coach Olly Dixon must have given his boys some sturn words following the last try as they went back up the field all guns blazing. Clifton tried to use the blindsie on several occassions from the scrummage, with some success and were eventually rewarde when Number 8, Jean-Luc Perkins managed to score his second. Sam Edwards was left with another simple kick, which he took giving Clifton a 19-14 lead. Sheffield were not to be out done, and came back at Clifton, scoring outwide to level the scores just before the end of the period at 19-19. In the third and final period, Clifton just ran out of steam. Sheffield managed to cross the Clifton line on 3 occassions making the score 38-19. Credit to Clifton as they battled on and spent much of the period in the Sheffield half, but they could not find the finishing touch that they had had early in the game. The final score finsihed Sheffield 38 - 19 Clifton. After the game, centre, Josh Hall was named Man of the Match for his tenacious tackling and his hunger to win the ball. Connor Edwards shared the Man of the Match with J Hall, for his outstanding running an what could be one of the tries of the season. Following the game, coach, Olly Dixon said 'I am really proud of the lads today, they worked really hard and showed that they have come on a lot from last year. I think we just lost our steam in the last period, but that is something we can work on, and there are a lot of positives we can take on in to our next game'. Team: 1. Tristan Buchanon, 2. Harvey Whitworth, 3. Sheffield Player, 4. Sheffield Player, 5. Kirk, 6. Jonathon Gammons, 7. Sam Abdul (capt), 8. Jean-Luc Perkins, 9. Liam Briston, 10. John Barker, 11. Kyle Johnson, 12.
