Goole Match Report
Rotherham Clifton U13’s hosted Goole last Sunday and were looking to bounce back from defeats in the previous two games against Sheffield and Doncaster. Goole started the game strong and mounted a series of attacks on the Clifton line. After five minutes Goole opened the scoring but were unable to convert. This seemed to spur on the home side, with skipper, Jean-Luc Perkins, powering through the opposition defence to score Clifton’s first try under the posts. Kirk Shaw added on the conversion. Almost immediately from the kick off Clifton broke down the field, with some hard yards gained by the forwards and Perkins again broke through to score his second try. Kirk Shaw added the conversion. Another strong run by Perkins 5 minutes before the break with quick recycled ball, enabled fly-half, Sam Edwards to score out wide. Shaw was unable to convert. Just before the break Goole were able to pull themselves back into the game, scoring their second unconverted try, making the half time score Clifton 19-10 Goole. Clifton started the second half strong, with skipper, Perkins adding two more tries to his tally, and Shaw adding one conversion. This giving the home side a healthy 31-10 lead. With around fifteen minutes to play, Clifton began to tire and Goole seized on the opportunity to get them back in the game. Two quick fire tries, one of which was converted, gave Goole a slim chance of winning, with the score at 31-22. With only two minutes left to play a further Goole try and conversion put them in touching distance, only two points behind Clifton. The remaining exchanges were nervous, Clifton trying to close out the game and Goole trying to force a score. With time running out for Goole, Clifton were awarded a penalty, which if kicked to touch would have signalled the full time whistle. However, Clifton skipper, Perkins, had other ideas and chose to take a quick tap. He again made one of his, now trademark, powerful runs to touch down under the posts, giving Kirk Shaw an easy conversion. This made the score at full time Clifton 38 – 29 Goole. After the game, Clifton coach Martyn Gammons said ‘It was a great result and more importantly an all round solid performance. We still have things to work on in training and hopefully we can build on this and keep winning’.
