Slightly edited version of the match report, as on the website. Rotherham Clifton’s Under 13’s travelled to Chesterfield last Sunday, looking to build on the win against Goole in the their previous match. Clifton started the game strongly, with Callum Lomax receiving the ball from the kick off, making a strong burst down the field, leaving the Chesterfield defence for dead and scoring the first try of the game. Shortly after, Lomax managed to bag his second of the game, giving the visitors a 10-0 lead. These early scores seemed to wake up Chesterfield, who began to play themselves back in to the game. With the home side now playing well, Clifton’s defence had to be stern. Clifton managed to maintain their strangle hold on the game and always looked dangerous with the ball in hand. Sam Edwards scored Clifton’s third try of the game, after making one of his darting runs. Unfortunately the conversion was missed. With the half time whistle looming Clifton’s hard work paid off again, with Jean-Luc Perkins scoring under the sticks, with Kirk Shaw tagging on the conversion to give Clifton a healthy 22-0 lead. Just before the break, there was a lack of concentration by Clifton which allowed Chesterfield to run in an unconverted try. Following the break, Clifton came out with a bang, with Jean-Luc Perkins running in under the posts again for his second score, Shaw added the conversion. Clifton, now firing on all cylinders, kept up the pressure, which was rewarded, with Perkins securing his hat-trick, after collecting the ball near his own line and running the length of the field to score. Kirk Shaw duly added the conversion. With Chesterfield now trying to exert pressure on the visitors, Clifton defence had to stay strong, and after some godd work by the back to retain possession, Sam Edwards managed another darting run to break through the defence and score his second try of the game. Just before the final whistle Chesterfield managed to cross Clifton’s line for a consolation try. Making the score at full time CHESTERFIELD 10 – 41 CLIFTON. Following the game Kirk Shaw was awarded the Man of the Match accolade, for his all round contribution during the game. Coach, Charlie Cole, said later ‘I am pleased with the way the team played today and its nice to see that the hard work in training is starting to pay dividends’.
